The French language is a Romance language that derived from popular Latin which, in the territory of Gaul, had slowly replaced Gallic (a Celtic language). Starting from the 5th century AD, the influence of the Gallic and Germanic substratum and the decline of cultural life led to a profound and quick alteration of this popular Latin of Gaul. The size of the territory, its division into kingdoms, duchies and counties, and the history of each of the regions have for a long time allowed native languages, dialects and patois to survive. Today, three Romance languages (Occitan or provençal, Catalan and Corsican), three Germanic languages (Lorraine, Alsatian and Flemish), one Celtic language (Breton) and one non-Indo-European language (Basque) are still spoken in France. But it is modern French, which appeared in the 17th century, which dominated and became the national language, spoken by all the inhabitants of metropolitan France and the D.O.M - T.O.M. (Overseas departments and territories).
